PETOSKEY — Two townships will be voting on a millage renewal proposal to continue to have access to the Petoskey District Library in the Nov. 5 election.

Both Resort and Bear Creek townships will see a four-year millage renewal request of 0.4 mills, which they have previously approved three times. Little Traverse and Springvale townships both approved the 0.4 mill renewal request in the August election. The millage would be for 2024-2027.

The funding from the millage provides operating expenditures, including staff wages, programming costs and collections costs. Millage money does not go towards building debt or capital expenditures.

"A public library is important for the community," said Val Meyerson, executive director of the Petoskey District Library. "It provides community space for everyone in the area, and it provides a place for people to not only get books and different items, but to meet and to gather and to learn and to recreate and it's important for the whole community and the townships are all apart of this community. So their support is just a vote to support community services."

If approved, the renewal would provide the library with $253,684 from Bear Creek Township and $175,000 from Resort Township.
