Charlevoix secures league title in odd way; Boyne City, EJ roll to wins

CHARLEVOIX — The Charlevoix football team expected to put their best effort on the field for four quarters Friday night and come away with an unbeaten conference title.

Well, only part of that was possible against Tawas at Kipke Field in Charlevoix.

After a 38-0 halftime advantage, Tawas forfeited the rest of the game, handing the Rayders the win and title in the oddest of ways possible.

The win moved the Rayders to 6-2 overall on the season and 4-0 in the Northern Michigan Football Conference Leaders Division, which wrapped up a second straight unbeaten league title season.

Charlevoix scored at least 28 points in all four league games, while posting a pair of shutouts along the way.

The Rayders got things done on the ground once again, though the star of the night was quarterback Ian Moran, who did it all.

Moran ran six times for 88 yards and two touchdowns, went 2 of 4 passing for 38 yards and a touchdown, then scored on a fumble recovery defensively. He also added an interception on defense.

Brady Warchol ran five times for 38 yards and a score and Logan Wadkins had two catches for 38 yards and a touchdown.

Warchol also led with six tackles, three for a loss and a pass deflection, while Andrew Glass made two sacks and Garrison Sterrett caused a fumble.

With the league now wrapped up, Charlevoix turns its focus to a tough regular season finale when they welcome in Kingsley on Friday, Oct. 25. The Stags will enter with a 6-2 record as well.

BOYNE CITY — The Boyne City football team has already proved the kind of damage they can do to an opponent when the run game is humming.

The Ramblers also don’t want anyone to forget they’re more than just a running team.

Behind an efficient night through the air from quarterback Drew Neer, the Ramblers did that Friday night and earned a fourth straight victory with a 36-0 final over visiting Oscoda.

Neer went 10 of 12 passing for 195 yards and two touchdowns, while the Ramblers added 147 yards on the ground as well.

The win helped bring Boyne City to 6-2 overall on the season, while Oscoda dropped to 5-3. It also came as Boyne’s second shutout of the year.

Ryan Spate ran for 90 yards on five carries and two touchdowns, then Leon Xiong added a touchdown on the ground.
