    How long do bearded dragons live is something, we must admit we didn't know the answer to. So we spoke to vet, Dr. Rebecca MacMillan to find out!

    If you are an experienced dragon owner then you probably already know that larger dragons tend to have a longer lifespan than smaller ones. If you have a smaller dragon or are considering welcoming one into your home, then don't worry. There are plenty of things you can do to help your bearded dragon live a long and happy life.

    Things like creating a consistent routine, feeding a varied diet, and providing lots of love and attention are some of the most important things you can do when it comes to bearded dragon care . But how long do they actually live? Let's find out.

    So how long do bearded dragons live? Dr. Rebecca MacMillan weighs in, "The average lifespan of bearded dragons is eight to 12 years, though some may live less than this and others may live a bit longer!"

    So if you're looking for a companion that will be around for a while, bearded dragons are a good choice. Regular vet visits, dietary supplements, and purchasing your pet from a reputable reptile breeder in the first place will all help your pet to stay as healthy as possible, which will enhance their overall quality of life.

    Bearded dragons originate from Australia, so it's important to try and replicate these living conditions as best as possible in terms of lighting, temperature, and even humidity settings.

    Dr. MacMillan says, "Using the correct substrate in their enclosure is also crucial in keeping your bearded dragon healthy. Reptile carpets, astroturf, ceramic tiles, rubber shelf liners, and alfalfa pellets are all safe options. I never recommend using sand as it could cause intestinal blockages if ingested.."

    What are the easiest types of bearded dragons to care for?

    "The Central bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps), Western bearded dragon (Pogona minor), and Eastern bearded dragon ( Pogona barbata) can all make good pets with the right care. Other types of bearded dragons tend to be rarer and can have more demanding needs. They may not be suitable unless you are an experienced reptile keeper," says MacMillan.

    Top tips for caring for your bearded dragon

    When it comes to enrichment for bearded dragons , there are a few things you can do to help your reptile friend thrive. Consider their living environment and make it equipped with things to help support their development.

    Dr. MacMillan says, "Hides, platforms, rocks, and branches in your pet’s enclosure will help your lizard to replicate natural behaviors which are good for their health and mental wellbeing. You could also consider a hammock for them and some safe plants, to add interest to their home."

    Dr. MacMillan also offered some advice is you have a female bearded dragon and that was if you'd like her to live longer than not to breed her. "Breeding can negatively impact her lifespan," she says.
