PFLUGERVILLE, Texas (KXAN) — A gas leak that prompted evacuations to several homes in Pflugerville on Wednesday was caused by “accidental damage during construction,” a city of Pflugerville spokesperson said in a statement on Thursday.

Around 8:15 p.m. Wednesday, the city notified residents of a major gas leak that was affecting the area of Mallard Pond Trail to Hanging Rock Drive. Emergency crews had to evacuate a total of seven homes in the area “out of an abundance of caution,” a city spokesperson said in a statement to KXAN.

“Pflugerville police were in direct contact with the affected residents. The City issued three notifications through the PfAlert system,” the spokesperson said.

The city said emergency crews worked diligently to ensure the area was safe.

“At this time, it appears the leak was caused by accidental damage during construction by a third-party utility contractor. Pflugerville Fire and Police responded to the area to assist with traffic control and safety assessment. We are appreciative of the quick response from all crews involved and we apologize for the disruption this caused our residents,” the spokesperson said.

Residents were told it was later safe to return to their homes, the city said.
