Two Penguins Prospects Soon Ready, One Is Not; WBS Screwed (+)
The Pittsburgh Penguins will have approximately $10 million to spend on free agents this summer after they take care of pending restricted free agents and possibly round out their projected lineup with cheap options already on hand. However, they may also have a couple of prospects who unexpectedly push for a spot in October.
Penguins Wrap: Why Bunting Is a Hit; New Role for Malkin?
The Pittsburgh Penguins are in the early stages of what promises to be a long, and possibly eventful, offseason. While management isn’t expected to make any major moves with players until closer to the NHL Draft, set for June 28-29 in Las Vegas, Penguins officials have gotten a chance to observe some of the organization’s top prospects perform for their farm team in Wilkes-Barre during the Calder Cup playoffs.
Penguins Report Card: Full Joel Blomqvist Scouting Report (+)
ALLENTOWN, Pa. — Two games and two similar results. The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins faced the potential end of their season with a loss to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms Friday in the best of three Opening Round series, but in addition to the team incentives, WBS goalie Joel Blomqvist had everything to play for.
Penguins Can Win NHL Draft Lottery … Sort Of
The Pittsburgh Penguins have a chance to win the NHL draft lottery May 7. Just not a very good one. And even if they do, they’re not going to get the top choice in the draft. That’s because NHL rules stipulate that teams can advance no more than 10...
Early Offseason Penguins Trade Bait List; Rakell or Smith?
Conventional wisdom says it is far too early to discuss the NHL trade market and what comes next for the Pittsburgh Penguins, whose summer is only two weeks old after failing to qualify for the Stanley Cup playoffs for the second consecutive year. One of the reasons the Penguins failed was the lack of middle-six scoring despite the pedigrees of Reilly Smith and Rickard Rakell.
Penguins Assistant Named to Team USA
Pittsburgh Penguins assistant Ty Hennes has been named to the same position on the Team USA staff for the upcoming IIHF World Championship, USA Hockey announced Friday. The team will be coached by John Hynes of the Minnesota Wild. Hynes is a former Penguins minor-league coach. The Worlds will be...
Why Penguins Should Keep Nedeljkovic, Let Blomqvist Develop
It was a bit jarring a week ago when Kyle Dubas all but guaranteed that Pittsburgh Penguins backup goalie Alex Nedeljkovic will not be re-signed. Not only because Dubas, who is the team’s president of hockey operations and general manager, doesn’t make a habit of publicly divulging his personnel plans, but because he made it clear that Joel Blomqvist will have an opportunity to claim the position Nedeljkovic held behind Tristan Jarry during the past season.
Dan’s Daily: Florida Beast Mode, Hopes on DeSmith, Penguins Slide Malkin?
The New York Islanders can’t hang, the Tampa Bay Lightning found out the Florida Panthers are a new level of good, and the Vancouver Canucks are trying to pump up Casey DeSmith. The Washington Capitals face a 3-0 deficit if they lose tonight, and it is the fourth and final day of our great trip to cover the Pittsburgh Penguins prospects converging on Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. This keyboard will pack up and head to Allentown today for Game 2 of the WBS Penguins series against the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.
Kingerski: Move Evgeni Malkin to Wing; Use Rare Free Agent Class
On the list of the Pittsburgh Penguins’ priorities, it has not been stated and may not even appear. Move Evgeni Malkin from center to the left wing. It’s been written and said before in this space, but it should now be a very serious consideration and near the top of the priority list for all involved. The Penguins should investigate a significant structural change and take full advantage of the rare bumper crop of free-agent centers to facilitate their makeover for next season.
Rakell’s Goal: ‘Come Back a Lot Better Next Year’
Everything in Rickard Rakell’s history suggested the Pittsburgh Penguins could pencil him in for 20 goals in 2023-24. After all, he was coming off a 28-goal season and had put up as many as 34 with Anaheim earlier in his career. And being projected onto one of the Penguins’ top two lines meant that he’d have Sidney Crosby or Evgeni Malkin as his center, so he could expect to get plenty of scoring opportunities.
Dan’s Daily: Zegras Rumors, Utah Goes Crazy, Penguins Prospects Battle
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. — Day 3 of our adventure to cover the mass of prospects arriving for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins will take a detour. Last night, we got a good look at Joel Blomqvist and Tristan Broz, and I think you’ll find the scouting reports interesting. We also conducted a sweeping PHN+ Q&A, including everything from mock trades to which players should or shouldn’t stick around. Dave Molinari also took a good look at Kyle Dubas’s Penguins trade record.
Penguins Prospects: Scouting Blomqvist, Broz; How Close to Ready (+)
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. — A video-reviewed goal, plenty of scuffles and cross-checks behind the play and a tight hockey game—exactly what you’d expect from players hoping to become Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers. The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins had a slightly different and probably tougher task Wednesday in Game 1...
Pettersson Joining Team Sweden; Rakell Cites Injury
There will be a second Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman playing for Sweden during the IIHF world championships in Czechia next month. Officials of the Swedish national team announced Wednesday that Marcus Pettersson has been added to the squad. Erik Karlsson, who was paired with Pettersson for much of the past season,...
The PHN+ Q&A: Penguins Offseason, Turbulence, Trades & Reaction
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. — The Pittsburgh Penguins face a rough offseason. It is the second consecutive early summer after 16 straight years of playoff appearances, and even a hard-charging run worthy of the late Arnold Palmer wasn’t enough to bring the warm-and-fuzzies to most of the fanbase. Fortunately for...
Kyle Dubas’ Trade Record With Penguins: Hits & Misses
Kyle Dubas has made it clear that the Pittsburgh Penguins’ approach to the offseason will not involve a tear-it-down rebuild, that the plan will be to construct a playoffs-caliber team via trades, free-agent signings and promotions from the farm team in Wilkes-Barre. Dubas, like most general managers, won’t be...

Dan’s Daily: Penguins Tough Decisions, New Maple Leafs ‘Built Differently’
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. — The Pittsburgh Penguins cannot move forward with caution as president of hockey operations/GM Kyle Dubas tried to do this season. It’s courage vs. patience. The Penguins have a truckload of prospects arriving in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton this week for the Round One playoff series that begins tonight. We’re working on a few features, but we’ve got one name that’s been under the radar you should watch for next season.

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. — There might have been 33 players on the ice at the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins practice Tuesday. Pittsburgh Penguins prospects arrived from near and far to join the AHL club as they begin a best-of-three Round One series against the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, the Philadelphia Flyers’ top farm club.
Penguins Blog: Admitting Real Problems, Making Hard Choices
The Pittsburgh Penguins organization faces a bevy of decisions over the next 12 months that will shape or re-shape the on-ice product. The decisions at the ice level could be transformative, too. It will take more courage than methodical caution to fix the Penguins this summer because, quite simply, they...
