Pettersson Just Makes Good Plays; Part of Penguins’ Future?
Marcus Pettersson wasn’t the Pittsburgh Penguins’ highest-scoring defenseman during the 2023-24 season. He didn’t log the most ice time among their defensemen, either. And he didn’t cash the biggest paychecks. He simply was the most reliable, responsible, consistent presence on their blue line over 82 games.
Dan’s Daily: Penguins Load Up Prospects, Flyers Trade Talk, Playoff Meltdowns
The Pittsburgh Penguins loaded up the prospect pool Monday for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins playoff series against Lehigh Valley. The Penguins brought in four intriguing prospects, including Ville Koivunen, whom we’re going to put eyes on later Tuesday morning (I’m writing the Daily at 4:30 a.m. so I can get to the WBS practice and chat with a few). Elsewhere in the Daily, the Philadelphia Flyers are stirring the NHL trade rumors with possible big-name moves, New York Islanders had a commanding lead but absolutely melted in the third period. Auston Matthews dragged his Maple Leafs team past the Bruins with a late charge, and VGK LTIR king Mark Stone scored in Game 1.
Karlsson Joining Sweden for World Championships
Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Erik Karlsson will play for Sweden during the world championship tournament in Czechia May 10-26. The announcement of his participation was made by officials of Sweden’s national team, who also made it known that two Buffalo Sabres — defenseman Rasmus Dahlin and forward Victor Olofsson — will take part in the competition for that country.
Penguins Grades: Evgeni Malkin and What Comes Next
Evgeni Malkin: B- His expected goals-for was his lowest full-season mark since 2018-19 (excluding his 33-game season in 2020-21). Malkin was still above water at 52%, but that’s well below last season’s career-consistent mark of 56%. The meteoric start and a strong finish after Malkin’s parents visited Pittsburgh...
Penguins Sign Pickering, New Prospects for WBS Playoffs
The Pittsburgh Penguins are stacking the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins roster with prospects and recent draft picks, including the recently acquired Ville Koivunen and 2022 first-round draft pick Owen Pickering. It will be Koivunen’s second appearance in North America. He played 12 games last season for the Chicago Wolves of the AHL....
Drew O’Connor’s Stock is Going Up. Way, Way Up
Missing the Stanley Cup playoffs for the second year in a row wasn’t the Pittsburgh Penguins’ only disappointment in the 2023-24 season. But for all that went wrong, all that did not go as planned, there were some positives. The relentless brilliance of Sidney Crosby’s two-way game. The...
Dan on TV: Penguins Offseason, Weird Looks
What will the Pittsburgh Penguins do this offseason to improve?. WPXI’s Final Word tackled the coming Penguins offseason and Penguins president of hockey operations/GM Kyle Dubas’s decision on the goalie tandem of Alex Nedeljkovic and Tristan Jarry. Our Dan Kingerski joined 93-7 the Fan’s Paul Zeise and the...
Dan’s Daily: Angry Flames Goalie Trade Rumors; Penguins Change
The NHL trade rumors are starting up again. Calgary Flames goalie Jacob Markstrom was terse following his exit interview and the rumors linking him to New Jersey were re-ignited. Dave Molinari explained how the Pittsburgh Penguins hit a home run with Michael Bunting (see what he did there?), and I delivered a tough comparison between the Penguins’ chief rival who made the playoffs and the home-bound Penguins.
Comparing Penguins to Playoff-Bound Capitals; What Caps Did Better
Despite the air of optimism that came from building on the season’s stretch run which almost earned them a playoff berth, the Pittsburgh Penguins joined the bottom half of the league in watching the Stanley Cup Playoffs on television Saturday night. The team the Penguins couldn’t catch was the...
Here’s How Bunting Got Penguins a Home Run
The trade, when the Pittsburgh Penguins made it, was about as popular — inside and outside the organization — as foot fungus. Not because of what president of hockey operations/GM Kyle Dubas got from Carolina in the deal — that full value of that package might not be known for several years — but because of what he gave up.
AHL Honors Penguins’ Prospect Joel Blomqvist
He might well be a Pittsburgh Penguins goalie next season, but top Penguins prospect Joel Blomqvist was honored by the AHL, which named him to the All-Rookie team. Blomqvist’s stats are worthy of notice. He leads all rookie goalies with 25 wins. He ranks third among all AHL goalies with a 2.14 goals-against-average and fifth among all goalies with a .921 save percentage.
Signs Point to Penguins Not Re-Signing Nedeljkovic; Space for Top Prospect
Alex Nedeljkovic got the news Thursday during breakup day. The Pittsburgh Penguins have a top goalie prospect pushing for an NHL sweater, and the team wants to see if he’s ready. That’s not good for Nedeljkovic’s future in Pittsburgh. Penguins president of hockey operations/GM Kyle Dubas held...
Penguins Sign NCAA Champ Tristan Broz to Entry-Level Deal
The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed Denver University center Tristan Broz, their second-round draft choice in 2021, to a three-year, entry-level contract. He will join their farm team in Wilkes-Barre on an amateur tryout agreement for the rest of the season. . Broz is 6-foot, 190 pounds and had career-highs in...
Penguins Wrap: Playoff Push Heartbreak; Farewell, Jeff Carter
For the second year in a row, the Pittsburgh Penguins’ season has ended before the Stanley Cup playoffs get started. Their late run at a spot in the postseason, and they’re moving into a spring and summer with a lot of questions and, most likely, plenty of changes.
Penguins Q&A: Dubas Presser, Criticism, and Optimism
CRANBERRY — Pittsburgh Penguins president/GM Kyle Dubas won’t hire a full-time GM to handle those duties, had some criticism for players, disappointment in the team, and had reason for optimism following the Penguins dramatic playoff charge that fell just short. Dubas took the time to answer all questions,...

Full Dubas Recap: ‘Surprised, Disappointed’ By How Penguins Sulked
CRANBERRY — The Pittsburgh Penguins traded Jake Guentzel to Carolina on March 7. A few hours after the deal, which netted a package that included Michael Bunting, was announced, the Penguins absorbed a 6-0 loss to Washington at PPG Paints Arena, the by-product of their most dispirited effort of the season.
Dubas Stops Just Short of Ripping Ryan Graves, ‘System Isn’t Excuse’
CRANBERRY—Pittsburgh Penguins president of hockey operations/GM Kyle Dubas noticeably grimaced when asked about defenseman Ryan Graves. Dubas held his season-ending press conference Friday at the UPMC Lemieux Complex, wrapping what he admitted was a roller coaster season with several sections that bore no resemblance to the previous. One of the sore spots of the season was Graves, whom Dubas signed to a healthy six-year, $27 million contract last July.
