Two Penguins Prospects Sign AHL Tryout Deals
Two Pittsburgh Penguins draft choices have signed amateur tryout agreements with their American Hockey League affiliate in Wilkes-Barre. Both players — defenseman Kalle Kangas and forward Emil Jarventie — are Finnish and were selected in the seventh round of the NHL Draft last summer. They have been named to Finland’s squad for the Under-20 Five Nations tournament in Slovakia, where they will compete later this month, after a stint in Wilkes-Barre.
Analysis: Which Team’s Path to Playoffs is Easiest?
Regardless of how much the Pittsburgh Penguins’ 3-2 overtime loss in Toronto Monday night stung — and it had to, quite a bit — they still have control of their fate in the Eastern Conference playoff race. Barely. Win their final four games, and they’re in.
A Few Uncomfortable Penguins Truths, Good and Bad
TORONTO — When Toronto Maple Leafs’ coach Sheldon Keefe put his top line with Auston Matthews, Tyler Bertuzzi, and Max Domi on the ice against the Penguins’ fourth line and third defensive pairing, he was probably salivating at the possibility of burying his opponent. And therein lies...
Dan’s Daily: Crosby’s Wild End to 2nd; More Drama for Coyotes Arena
It was a well-played game from start to finish, in almost all phases of the game. Yet the Pittsburgh Penguins needed a tying goal in the third period and never got the go-ahead goal in a 3-2 overtime loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs. Pittsburgh Hockey Now has a full analysis from the barn just outside the path of totality, including Sidney Crosby’s wild end to the second period. Elsewhere in the Daily, there was a little drama between teammates in Edmonton as Corey Perry and Evander Kane had a dustup, there’s more drama in Arizona where the mayor of the land bordering the possible new Coyotes arena is publicly blasting their plans as “amateur,” and TSN has a lot more on Crosby.
Penguins Postgame: Crosby Force, Bad Skates, Bad Luck
TORONTO — It was both bad luck and bad skate blades that doomed the Pittsburgh Penguins Monday in a 3-2 overtime loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs. Coach Mike Sullivan admitted he planned to start Sidney Crosby in overtime, but Crosby was having an issue with his skates. So, Lars Eller started the OT period but couldn’t get off the ice. Toronto pinned the Penguins trio in the defensive zone, and defenseman Jake McCabe scored the winner on a short breakaway.
Penguins Room: Sullivan Explains OT Decision; Nedeljkovic Miffed
TORONTO — Sidney Crosby has old-school skates. They often serve him very well, especially in games like Monday, in which he largely dominates the competition. However, those skates are also a hindrance at times because their blades are not easily replaced. Such was the reason Crosby did not start overtime or see ice time in the extra period, as the Penguins lost 3-2 in OT to Toronto.
Toronto, McCabe End Penguins’ Winning Streak, 3-2, in OT
The effort was there for the Pittsburgh Penguins. So were the focus and commitment and desperation they’ve been playing with for more than a week. This time, though, it wasn’t quite enough, in part because they had another 0-fer night on the power play. But despite losing to...
The Moment Penguins KNEW They Were In It; ‘Winning is Good’ (+)
The Pittsburgh Penguins never admitted they were out of the playoff fight. They used coded language, admitting they knew their situation, understood the standings, and that they needed to win games. No one waved the white flag even, as it should have been clearly obvious they weren’t going to make the playoffs.
NHL Honors Sidney Crosby’s Accomplishments
Pittsburgh Penguins center Sidney Crosby has been honored as the NHL’s No. 2 star for the week that ended Sunday. Tampa Bay winger Nikita Kucherov, the league’s leading scorer, is the No. 1 star and New York Rangers winger Artemi Panarin is No. 3. Crosby had five goals...
Penguins Blog: Puustinen Drop, Goalie Battle, Rethinking Trade?
TORONTO — And down the stretch they come. The Pittsburgh Penguins have the most arduous schedule of the five teams that are still realistically battling for one of the two available playoff spots in the Eastern Conference. The Penguins drew the short straw, as they’ve done all season, from...
Penguins Game 78 vs. Maple Leafs: Lines, Notes & How to Watch
The Pittsburgh Penguins have the stage to themselves Monday in terms of their hunt for a playoff spot, with no other teams they are competing with on the schedule. With a win on the road against Auston Matthews and the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Penguins (36-30-11, 83 points) can leapfrog the Detroit Red Wings (84 points), who are in the second Eastern Conference wildcard spot, and equal the 85 points of the third-place New York Islanders in the Metropolitan Division.
Dan’s Daily: ‘Hot Mess’ Playoff Race; Crosby Getting Recognition
TORONTO — The Pittsburgh Penguins are not favored to hang onto a playoff spot, but they got some help Sunday night even as they slid out of a playoff spot. The Washington Capitals faceplanted while the Detroit Red Wings took care of business. TSN did a deep dive into the “hot mess” playoff race, too. Dave Molinari reignited talk of Sidney Crosby getting Hart Trophy recognition. The NHL rumor mill is churning in Toronto, where debate is beginning on John Tavares’s future. In Jeff Marek’s latest column, he indirectly sheds a little light on the Penguins’ trade for Nic Deslauriers, which never happened.
Latest Penguins Playoff Scenario: Red Wings Nudge Ahead, Caps Falter
It was a fun 24 hours. The Pittsburgh Penguins’ remarkable eight-game points streak put them in a playoff position on Saturday, but Sunday, one team took it away. The Buffalo Sabres were no help to the Penguins, as the Detroit Red Wings handled them 3-1 at Little Caesars Arena. Detroit’s victory is only its second in the last seven games. All of its goals were scored in the first period.
The Hart Trophy Case for Sidney Crosby
Improbable as it seemed just days ago, the Pittsburgh Penguins have a hold — admittedly, a tenuous one — on a spot in the Stanley Cup playoffs, and people across North America are beginning to notice. They also seem to be catching on that Sidney Crosby is having...
Dan’s Daily: Update on Ref, Flyers Stink, Penguins Ride Wave
The Pittsburgh Penguins are riding the tide of finally playing well and feeling like they are playing well. The Penguins took it to the Tampa Bay Lightning and then had to steel their nerves to overcome a furious rally. PHN takes you inside the locker room, where Michael Bunting had some great quotes, the chalkboard, where Mike Sullivan dialed up a couple of twists, and even the stands, where Evgeni Malkin’s parents were overwhelmed by the emotion. Elsewhere in the Daily, the Philadelphia Flyers’ collapse is nearly complete, and the NHL updated the status of referee Steve Kozari.
Believe It: Updated Penguins Playoff Standing
In a playoff position. Yup. When the hockey world wakes up Sunday morning, the Pittsburgh Penguins will be sitting in the second wildcard spot in the Eastern Conference. The Penguins’ huge, heart-stopping 5-4 win Saturday afternoon over the visiting Tampa Bay Lightning set things up for a move into that playoff spot, but the the NHL’s evening schedule could have changed that.
We Feel Ya, Malkin’s Parents Emotional at Penguins Game
The Pittsburgh Penguins’ Lazarus routine, rising from the playoff dead to claim what would be a wildcard spot on Saturday, was fraught with emotion. On the ice, the Penguins scrapped and clawed for a 5–4 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning. The jubilation when Michael Bunting scored the game-winning goal with just over five minutes remaining sent the PPG paint crowd into a frenzy.
Penguins Postgame: HUGE Win, Does Bunting Make Pens Better than Guentzel?
The Pittsburgh Penguins led 4-1 as “Geno” chants echoed through PPG Paints Arena. By the middle of the third period, the Penguins and Tampa Bay Lightning were tied 4-4. Penguins’ winger Michael Bunting let out a monstrous holler when he scored the game-winner at 14:32, and the Penguins held on for a 5-4 win.
Penguins Six-Pack: ‘We Just Hung in There’; Bunting in Crosshairs
The Pittsburgh Penguins have had a problem protecting leads all season, and Tampa Bay possesses one of the most volatile offenses in the NHL. It probably shouldn’t have been a complete surprise, then, that the Lightning ran off three unanswered goals in the first 11 minutes of the third period Saturday at PPG Paints Arena to transform a 4-1 deficit into a 4-4 tie.
