Penguins Game 47 vs. Jets: Lines, Notes & How to Watch
The Pittsburgh Penguins come off their bye week and All-Star break Tuesday to host the Winnipeg Jets, one of the top teams in the Western Conference. The Penguins (22-17-7) are in the same familiar position of being in a tough race to get into a playoff position, and points become more crucial now that the unofficial second half of the season is kicking off.
Dan’s Daily: Penguins Need Better; Fallout From Team Canada Charges
There is a lot of NHL news in the Daily, but most of it is heavy, and none of it is good. On the hockey side, Dave Molinari took a pessimistic look at the Pittsburgh Penguins’ playoff hopes. Erik Karlsson is hopeful things will turn around, and the Rangers and Islanders won on Monday. In real-life serious matters, a defense attorney on TSN laid out the process and timeline for the five charged players of the alleged 2018 Hockey Canada sexual assault. The NHL granted salary cap space for the Devils, Flyers, and Flames for the players facing charges in that incident. And, Evgeny Kuznetsov checked into the NHL Player Assistance Program.
Nice Place. Why Don’t Penguins Win There More Often? (+)
CRANBERRY — PPG Paints Arena is, all things considered, a top-notch facility. Sure, it’s been open since 2010, but it’s holding up well, especially after a recent $30 million investment in renovations and upgrades. Creature comforts aside, however, the Pittsburgh Penguins’ home rink hasn’t treated them particularly...
Penguins Notes: Karlsson’s Formula for Success; Sullivan’s Milestone
CRANBERRY — The Pittsburgh Penguins will come out of the NHL’s all-star break in a pretty precarious spot. They’ll enter their game against Winnipeg Tuesday at 7:08 p.m. at PPG Paints Arena with a 22-17-7 record that has them looking up at most of the Eastern Conference.
Penguins Need a Lot More From Reilly Smith; Goals & a Forward Outlook
The season started with fireworks for Evgeni Malkin and Reilly Smith. Both piled up healthy offensive statistics, bolting out the gate with a vengeance. Then Smith, 32, was injured on Jan. 11. Prior to leaving the lineup, he had just two goals in his previous 30 games. Goalie Tristan Jarry was just one behind.
Six Reasons Penguins Might Miss Stanley Cup Playoffs
The Pittsburgh Penguins have left a lot of points on the table this season. That doesn’t include the ones they’ve left on the floor, the credenza and in the cushions of the loveseat. They have 36 games remaining to close the gap separating them from the Eastern Conference...
WXPI Final Word: Dan Goes Off on Guentzel Trade Talk, Trolls
Oh boy. The Pittsburgh Penguins are chasing a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, the NHL trade rumors have targeted Jake Guentzel, and Penguins Twitter has been insufferable. Or so says Pittsburgh Hockey Now’s Dan Kingerski. Making his appearance on WPXI’s Final Word, Kingerski let it rip when it...
Dan’s Daily: Penguins Add Finnish; Will Trades Spur More Action?
The Pittsburgh Penguins added some Finnish to their lineup by signing Jesse Puljujarvi to a two-year NHL contract. Sidney Crosby scoffed at taking a day off. John Ludvig and coach Mike Sullivan don’t want him to dial back the physicality even with the inherent risks. The NHL trade rumors are whirring as recent trades are spurring some GMs to move quickly. Does Alex Ovechkin have enough gas in the tank to catch Wayne Gretzkey’s goal record? And the Vancouver Canucks are pumped to add Elias Lindholm.
For Ludvig, Those are the Breaks … and the Bumps … and the Bruises (+)
CRANBERRY — The Pittsburgh Penguins understand — and appreciate — what John Ludvig adds to their defense corps. That the physicality he brings to their blue line is unmatched by any of his teammates. They also recognize that, while Ludvig’s style of play comes with some obvious...
Penguins Notes: No Rest for Crosby; Revving up for Jets
CRANBERRY — Sidney Crosby didn’t have to be at the Pittsburgh Penguins’ practice Sunday afternoon at UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex. He had, after all, been the team’s lone representative at the NHL All-Star event in Toronto, which meant he had been involved with that the previous couple of days, while most of his teammates were enjoying the waning hours of their week-long break in the season.
Penguins Changes: Smith, Ludvig Rejoin Practice; Puustinen Remains in WBS
CRANBERRY — Are the Pittsburgh Penguins almost back to full health? In their first practice after the bye and All-Star Game break, both LW Reilly Smith and defenseman John Ludvig were in full-contact sweaters. Ludvig is still listed on the long-term injured list but was loaned to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton...
Penguins Sign Jesse Puljujarvi; Journey Back to NHL Complete
Jesse Puljujarvi is back in the NHL. Sunday, the Pittsburgh Penguins completed his journey by signing the 25-year-old winger to a two-year deal with an average annual value of $800,000. Puljujarvi had double hip resurfacing surgery last summer after stumbling through an ineffective 2022-23 NHL season. He signed an NHL free agent tryout deal with the Penguins in December but joined just one practice before working with the team and trainers in an off-ice capacity.
Six Reasons to Believe Penguins Can Make Playoffs
The Pittsburgh Penguins will be in a pretty precarious spot when they convene for practice Sunday afternoon at UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex. They are 22-17-7, which leaves them in fifth place in the Metropolitan Division, five points behind third-place Philadelphia. They also are 10th in the Eastern Conference and trail Detroit, which holds the second wild-card playoff berth, by seven points.
Dan’s Daily: Trades Set Penguins Choices; Phil Kessel Pounding Pavement
The flurry on the NHL trade market last week set forth the fork in the dirty road and the choices for the Pittsburgh Penguins and Jake Guentzel. Pittsburgh Hockey Now put forth Guentzel’s trade value and the factors in the Penguins’ decision. We’ve also got more from the All-Star Game in Toronto. Elsewhere in the Daily, Phil Kessel is still stumping for a job. The NHLPA has had enough of the Arizona Coyotes’ failure to institute an arena plan and ripped the org.
Crosby Bows Out Early in All-Star Game
Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby was the third-overall pick in the All-Star draft Thursday. His Nova Scotia neighbor and friend Nathan MacKinnon selected him. MacKinnon, the Colorado Avalanche captain, also selected Avalanche teammate Cale Makar for a star-packed team in the 3v3 tournament. Team MacKinnon led Game 1 by two...
Kingerski: Why It’s Time to Dump the NHL All-Star Game & Move On
The NHL All-Star game is a treat for the host city and dozens of media folks having a few pops on the company dime. It’s also great for league sponsors who spread millions on TV and streams to affirm their importance by rubbing elbows with NHL players. Pittsburgh Penguins...
How Monahan Trade Affects Penguins, Jake Guentzel; A Full Analysis
The NHL trade market is set, but there are more details to consider for the Pittsburgh Penguins and pending free agent Jake Guentzel. Off-handedly, Sportsnet 590 host Nick Kypreos mentioned during his show Friday that he heard the Penguins put a six-year, $50 million contract in front of Guentzel, but it has not yet been signed.
Penguins Wrap: Hitting a Timely High Note; Taking the Measure of Malkin
It’s been a week since the Pittsburgh Penguins played a game, and they won’t have another until Winnipeg visits PPG Paints Arena Tuesday at 7:08 p.m. Their extended time off is the result of their bye week and the NHL’s all-star break, and the Penguins were able to enjoy it because they entered it in style, after an exhilarating victory over Montreal.
Dan’s Daily: Canadiens Trade Monahan; Crosby Ripped for Skipping Festivities
I imagine you’ll have some feelings, and I have some thoughts, but Daily Face-Off’s Frank Seravalli took Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby to task for skipping Thursday’s All-Star Game draft. The NHL trade rumors were behind as the Montreal Canadiens dealt Sean Monahan to the Winnipeg Jets for a healthy price. The NHL will host a small international tournament for players next year and let the boys go to the 2026 and 2030 Olympics.
