NHL to Stage 4-Nation International Tournament in 2025
It will not quite be the long-rumored World Cup of Hockey, but the NHL announced Friday that the league will host a four-nation international tournament next season in host cities Boston and Montreal. The Four-Nations Face-Off co U.S., Canada, Finland, and Sweden will compete in the tournament, which is seven...
NHL Players Back to Olympics; Will Crosby, Malkin Go?
Any number of the Pittsburgh Penguins will now — or again — have the chance to represent their countries at the Olympics after a three-pronged agreement announced Friday. The NHL, the NHL Players Association and the International Ice Hockey Federation have agreed to NHL player participation at the 2026 and 2030 Games, they announced jointly in conjunction with the NHL All-Star weekend.
Ex-Baseball Executive Theo Epstein Joins Penguins’ Ownership Group
Theo Epstein, an executive with three World Series-winning teams, is joining the ownership of Fenway Sports Group and will serve as a “senior advisor” to the company. FSG owns the Pittsburgh Penguins, as well as the Boston Red Sox, Liverpool Football Club of the English Premier League, RFK Racing and Boston Common Golf.
Dan’s Daily: Trade Rumor Roundup; Tocchet Against Oilers Breaking Penguins’ Record
The Pittsburgh Penguins hold the all-time consecutive win streak at 17, but the record is in jeopardy of falling to the Edmonton Oilers. Vancouver Canucks coach Rick Tocchet, a member of the 1992-93 Penguins team that set the record, candidly hoped the Oilers lose. Shelly Anderson critically examined Evgeni Malkin’s value to the Penguins. The NHL All-Star Game had its little draft to select teams, and I’m not sure anyone cared, but we’ve got the NHL trade rumor roundup.
Eastern Conference Power Rankings; Penguins Rule Mushy Middle
After the NHL All-Star Game, it is go time. There is no more time to waste, no more mulligans and every point earned brightens the light at the end of the 82-game tunnel, and every point lost dims that light just a little. The NHL trade deadline and big decisions also loom. Only a few teams at the top of the Metro and Atlantic Divisions are comfortable, as the Pittsburgh Penguins and the rest define the mushy middle and uncertainty.
Dan’s Daily: Canucks Blockbuster Trade; Penguins Under Microscope
Perhaps no one should be surprised that Jim Rutherford and his protege Patrik Allvin pulled the first blockbuster NHL trade and did so in January. The Canucks snapped up Calgary Flames pivot Elias Lindholm, thus cornering the market on star players named Elias. A scoring winger who could help the power play would add a few wins for the Pittsburgh Penguins, and there are a few intriguing names on the block. The trade chatter is also bubbling in Philly, and who is next out of Calgary?
Penguins Hot Stove: Looking for Scoring Wingers
It is five weeks and counting toward the March 8 NHL trade deadline. The Pittsburgh Penguins are both outside the playoff seeds but a favorite to overtake one or more teams, including the Philadelphia Flyers, to put themselves in the NHL postseason. On the hot stove, reports link the New...
Penguins Roster Analysis: Some Forwards Sizzle, Others Fizzle (+)
The Pittsburgh Penguins have gotten excellent offensive production from their top line, particularly Sidney Crosby and Jake Guentzel, through the first 46 games of 2023-24. Conversely, they haven’t gotten as much as they want — or need — from the third and fourth units. And the No....
Dan’s Daily: Talking Penguins Deadline; Team Canada Players Identified
The five members of the 2018 Team Canada facing sexual assault charges were outed via a report on TSN Tuesday, but the fallout didn’t stop there. The Calgary Flames claimed Dillon Dube provided no advance knowledge of the pending situation when he asked for a leave, and additional reports claim the players kept information from their teams. Turning to more enjoyable topics, we had lots of Pittsburgh Penguins discussion, from radio appearances in Edmonton discussing the NHL trade rumors surrounding Jake Guentzel to full-bore analysis and a good look at how former Penguins are doing with their new teams.
Dan on the Radio: Guentzel, Puljujarvi, and Penguins Trade Deadline
The Pittsburgh Penguins are quite the topic of conversation around the NHL. From Jake Guentzel’s future to president of hockey operations/GM Kyle Dubas possibly making some earth-shattering moves at the NHL trade deadline, the Penguins have the bright spotlights upon them. Tuesday, Pittsburgh Hockey Now’s Dan Kingerski appeared on...
How Former Penguins are Faring; Who to Blame and Credit
An interesting trend has developed as the Pittsburgh Penguins have undergone tumultuous and significant changes both on the ice and above. The changeover in the front office, combined with a stocked top-six, has created a plethora of former Penguins around the league. Some of them are finding more success than...
Penguins Roster Analysis: How Have Defensemen, Goalies Performed?
The Pittsburgh Penguins are in a fairly precarious spot as they move through their bye week and the NHL’s all-star break. (Part 1 of 2. Wednesday, PHN will publish the roster analysis of the forwards) They are in a three-way tie for 10th place in the Eastern Conference, six...
Dan’s Daily: Rewarding Sidney Crosby; Preds & Habs Look for Trade Partners
Many teams in the NHL hit their bye this week, while a few others will get the bye after the NHL All-Star Game in Toronto later this week. Dave Molinari looked at how to reward Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby instead of forcing him into a meaningless mid-season show. A Columbus Blue Jackets prospect popped off after being demoted. The Montreal Canadiens will be a big move and shaker on the NHL trade market. Our colleagues tried to line up the prices and the Habs’ best matches. What will the Ottawa Senators do with Vladimir Tarasenko? And the Nashville Predators phones will be busy.
Molinari: Here’s Why Sidney Crosby Shouldn’t Be an NHL All-Star (+)
Sidney Crosby has been, by far, the Pittsburgh Penguins’ best player this season. Anyone who feels otherwise likely is a blood relative (or, at least, the blindly loyal agent) of one of his teammates. Crosby was, by any measure, completely worthy of being selected to participate in the NHL’s...
Dan’s Daily: Penguins Path vs. Fans; Bye-Week Trade Rumors
Many Pittsburgh Penguins fans want them to surrender. The players saw their season flash before their eyes on Saturday, and old age burned and raged at close of day. We analyzed why the Penguins’ comeback win Saturday was so important and why they’re not rebuilding. Former Ottawa Senators player Alex Formenton surrendered to police and was charged in connection with the alleged 2018 Team Canada sexual assault incident. Patrik Laine has entered the NHL’s Player Assistance Program. The NHL trade market is still short on goalies, but ESPN reports players are intrigued by Utah expansion.
Kingerski: Why the Penguins Aren’t Rebuilding (and Probably Won’t)
Against incessant cries to obliterate the roster in a hailstorm and flurry of Pittsburgh Penguins trades, the team’s last two general managers have not instigated a demolition of the Penguins roster in exchange for prospects, draft picks, and the hope of future sunshine in exchange for pain today. Facts...
Penguins Send Puustinen, Shea, Ludvig to WBS During Break
The Pittsburgh Penguins, who are heading into an extended break, on Sunday sent three players to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League — winger Valtteri Puustinen and defenseman Ryan Shea on regular reassignments, and defenseman John Ludvig, who was loaned on a conditioning assignment. Presumably, Puustinen and Shea are...
Penguins Six-Pack: Was That a Season-Saver? Another Crosby Classic
The Pittsburgh Penguins might not have saved their season Saturday night. Perhaps their 3-2, come-from-behind overtime victory over Montreal at PPG Paints Arena will turn out to have done nothing more than give them a brief respite from a string of disappointing results, allow them to go through their bye week and the NHL all-star break in a slightly more upbeat frame of mind.
Dan’s Daily: Monahan is NY Trade Target; Penguins’ Dramatic Pushback
Facing disaster, the Pittsburgh Penguins pushed back in the third period and avoided what could have been a mortally wounding loss. Sidney Crosby came to the rescue. The New York Rangers are on the NHL trade market for a center, perhaps Montreal Canadiens’ pivot Sean Monahan. The Metro Division teams lost, but the wild card leaders won, keeping the Penguins at arm’s length. And the Edmonton Oilers are on the heels of the 1992-93 record-setting Penguins.
