America’s Least Sustainable City

Many of America’s cities have gone green. They have built parks, planted hundreds of trees, in some cases thousands, changed how they dispose of waste, and given incentives to local businesses to green themselves. On the other hand, some cities do not appear to care about the environment at all.

LawnStarted has issued a study called America’s Most Sustainable Cities. The data comes from five categories– government policy, sustainable development, pollution, transportation, and food production. Energy efficiency and the presence of parks were also considerations. The universe was America’s 500 cities by population. Scores can range from 100 to zero.

Poor Results In Texas

Pharr, TX, was at the bottom of the list. Five of the worst ten cities were in Texas–Beaumont, Edinburg, League City, and Tyler.

Pharr had a grade of 23.54. New York had the top score at 68.73.

Several Texas cities and several others in the South were on the list because ” these regions lack sustainable policies, infrastructure, and adequate options for car-free transportation.”

Pharr is on the Mexican border, west of the Gulf of Mexico. Its population is less than 80,000, and over 9 of 10 residents are Hispanic. The city had a population of 46,660 in 2000 and 79,715 in 2020.

Pharr is extremely poor. About a third of the population lives below the poverty level.
