PHARR, Texas ( ValleyCentral ) – Hardware stores in the Rio Grande Valley are preparing for the potential storm and advise others to be prepared as well.

Abraham Padron, an agent for Safeguard Insurance recommends that residents record their property before any damages occur.

“One of the things I always tell our clients is videotape your home now. Videotape your home. Videotape your contents going into your home. Videotape from right to left, every room,” said Padron. “You never know if you’re going to get flooded. You don’t know what damage you’re gonna get.”

How to prepare for unexpected weather during vacation

Isaac Smith employee at Matt’s Building Materials says the damages strike different kinds of homes, but there are tools to prevent each of them.

“A mobile home needs to be tied down. You need to make sure you strap that down using the anchor system,” said Smith. “Windows, board them up or tape them up. If you can’t get the plywood or can’t afford the plywood, tape across the windows.”

Smith says they have stocked up on these tools, in case the storm season worsens.

“Have already started prepping during the storm season. We prep up for the sandbags and tarps and plylocks and plywood and we have a good amount of stock on hand,” he said. “It’s ample for right now, but if a storm comes through, we’re definitely going to take a hit.”

Padrón also believes it is smart to invest in storm-proofing ahead of time, including insurance.

“You can still buy insurance right now, as long as a storm does not come into the gulf. Once it comes into the gulf we have a moratorium. That means we’re not allowed to sell anything.”
