Vice President Kamala Harris attacked the U.S. Supreme Court and praised former Vice President Mike Pence during a campaign event in Philadelphia on Saturday afternoon.

Harris appeared to reference the court’s recent ruling on presidential immunity – which awarded former President Donald Trump a partial win as he fights two federal criminal cases – one related to the handling of classified documents and another about his role in the Jan. 6 riots.

“So ultimately in this election, we each face a question: What kind of a country do we want to live in?” Harris asked a crowd in the battleground state. “And here is the beauty of this moment. We have a power the power to answer that question, each one of us.”

“And the question being, do we want to live in a country of freedom, compassion, and rule of law, or a country of chaos, fear, and hate,” she continued. “We each have the power to answer this question.”

In reference to the court and to Pence’s decision not to participate in a team Trump plan to interfere with the 2020 election results by declining to recognize the electors in some states, Harris praised her predecessor. She also lashed out at Trump.

    The vice president said:

If the Supreme Court says the laws do not apply to Donald Trump, if extremists in Congress continue to bow down to him, if people like Mike Pence are not around to stand up to him, our last line of defense is the ballot box. Your vote, your voice. So today I ask the leaders here, are you ready to make your voices heard?

Harris concluded, telling her crowd in Philadelphia that voting for Democrats in the upcoming election is choosing “freedom” and “opportunity.”

Pence has drawn the ire of Trump since Jan. 6, 2021, over his refusal to participate in a scheme former Trump administration trade adviser Peter Navarro has previously referred to as the “Green Bay Sweep,” which could have overturned the 2020 election results if it had been successful.

The Supreme Court drew the ire of opponents of Trump last month when a majority ruled presidents had complete immunity for some actions taken while on the job.
