Giglio: Phillies made a mistake by getting rid of Rhys Hoskins

Joe Giglio believes Dave Dombrowski and the Philadelphia Phillies made a mistake by letting go of Rhys Hoskins.

"I keep coming back to something that I can't get out of my head and it's that the Phillies made a mistake this offseason with how they built the roster," Giglio said on Thursday's 94WIP Midday Show. "They chose Johan Rojas and his defense—and just the idea of defense. Bryce Harper at first base, better defense. Let's put Rojas in the outfield, better defense. And they chose that over something that was very known, and that was Rhys Hoskins' bat.

"They miss Rhys Hoskins. The Phillies made a mistake here. They chose defense over offense and right now they can't hit enough."

Hoskins, 31, signed a two-year deal with the Milwaukee Brewers this offseason worth $34 million. And after missing the entire 2023 season with a torn ACL, the Brewers' first baseman is off to a hot start with five hits and two home runs in his first 17 at-bats, walking three times and striking out only three times.

As a team, the Phils are hitting just .223, which ranks 20th in Major League Baseball. Their .305 on-base percentage is 19th and their .355 slugging percentage is also 19th.

Individually, Nick Castellanos is just 3-20 (.150) and Trea Turner is just 5-23 (.217). Johan Rojas is an abysmal 1-15 (.067).

"If Rhys was back, if they let Bryce go back to right field, if they put Rhys at first base, they'd be a way better offense," Giglio said. "You can bat him second, you can drop Turner down. You can bat him fourth, you can protect Bryce Harper...The reality is, they miss that bat."
