The NL-leading Phillies were dealt a big blow Tuesday: catcher J.T. Realmuto has been placed on the 10-day IL, and will undergo a meniscectomy on his right knee on Wednesday.

Per the team, there is no timetable for his return, but president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski is expected to address the situation prior to Tuesday’s game in Boston.

Realmuto has been battling knee soreness all year, and sat out three games last month due to the knee, but has still hit .261 with seven homers and 20 RBI in 51 games. However, he was removed for a pinch-runner late in Sunday’s game in London, and will now be on the shelf indefinitely.

Garrett Stubbs, who has slashed .173/.271/.192 in 59 plate appearances this season, will become the Phils’ primary backstop, and to replace Realmuto on the roster, the Phillies recalled Rafael Marchan from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Marchan, who was up with the Phillies once this year but did not play, has played 13 games between Triple-A and Class-A Clearwater, hitting .233 with two homers and eight RBI after missing the first six weeks of the season with a back injury.
