Four public pools open on Monday to kick off the summer season in Philadelphia.

Why it matters: The openings come as the region's first major heat wave of the year arrives, pushing temps into the 90s throughout the week.

State of play: Philly is scheduled to open 25 public pools on a phased-in basis through June 23, per the city's website . The first batch of pools to open Monday:

How it works: All open pools will offer public swim 1-4pm daily, with additional hours varying by location.

    • The city's website did not include additional pool hours for each site.

The caveat: Due to the ongoing lifeguard shortage , pool schedules and daily hours are based on available staffing.

Zoom in: While the current pool opening schedule only extends through June 23, city spokesperson Charlotte Merrick tells Axios the city will post new dates each week.

    • Ten pools will not open this summer due to maintenance or renovations, including Amos Pool, Baker Pool, CB Moore Pool, Cohen (Hillside) Pool and Cohox Pool, per the city.

Flashback: Last year, the city had more than 360 lifeguards and operated 61 pools on split schedules because of staffing shortages.

What we're watching: The city declined to share how potential staffing shortages will affect pool schedules this year.

    • More information will be released on Monday, Merrick says.
    • The city advises residents to contact a pool directly to confirm if it's open.
