Highway sign gaffe directs drivers to "Cenrtal" Philadelphia

A freshly installed sign at an Interstate 95 on-ramp in Holmesburg is getting attention for all the wrong reasons.

Driving the news: The state highway directs drivers to "Cenrtal" Philadelphia and Chester from the intersection of Cottman Avenue and State Road.

    • Crews covered the sign with a black tarp on Monday and were expected to place a placard with the correctly spelled word over the error Monday night, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (DOT) spokesperson Krys Johnson told Axios.
    • A new sign is expected to be installed later this week.

What it's worth: Replacing the sign is estimated to cost $15,000, all of which will be covered by the site's contractors, Johnson said.

    • Rocal Inc. fabricated the sign and it was installed by ML Ruberton Construction Company, state DOT spokesperson Alexis Campbell tells Axios.

What they're saying: "This error should not have happened and definitely should have been caught before the sign was installed," Campbell says.

    • "We are reviewing our processes to ensure that this doesn't happen again," she added.

Zoom in: The large, green sign is located near the newly restored section of I-95 , where a tanker burst into flames last year leading to a partial highway collapse.

    • The on-ramp to I-95 south where the sign is located is currently not open to traffic.
