    Former Philadelphia councilwoman Joan Levy Specter dies at age 90

    Former Philadelphia councilwoman Joan Specter has died at 90 years old. She passed away peacefully in her Haverford home on Saturday, June 29 th from complications with dementia.

    Apart from serving four terms on the city council, she was an entrepreneur, gourmet baker, and wife to the late U.S. Senator Arlen Specter.

    Specter focused on non-partisan issues such as housing, daycare, child nutrition, and art.

    During her time on the city council, she pushed for equality by helping make it illegal for the city to do business with discriminatory companies and became one of the first female members of a once all-male boathouse row club.
