Thousands pack the Ben Franklin Parkway to celebrate July 4th in Philadelphia

While some people traveled out of town for the Fourth of July, many chose to stay and celebrate right here in Philadelphia, the birthplace of America.

The Ben Franklin Parkway was packed with thousands of people who celebrated Independence Day with a concert and a fireworks display.

The Welcome America Festival was marked by several weeks of events, culminating in Thursday night's concert featuring Kesha and Ne-Yo.

We caught up with Zachary Laloup of Spring City, Pa. before the concert got underway.

A member of the Army National Guard, he said he feels especially proud on the Fourth of July.

"I love what the United States stands for and I just generally love this country. So much freedom and diversity, and I'm just so excited and happy to defend this country," Laloup said.

Earlier in the day, people gathered for a kickoff for the celebrations at Independence Hall.

People lined the parade route all decked out in their red white and blue ready to celebrate the Fourth of July in the birthplace of America!

Mayor Cherelle Paker recognized several people in attendance and gave out multiple awards.

"Although this day is a day to reflect and rejoice on our nation's birthday, it is most definitely not a day when we should be resting on our laurels - so much work to do as a city, commonwealth [and] country," Parker said.

People from all over traveled to where it all started to celebrate America's birthday.

The Independence Day Parade kicked off at 11 a.m. on 2nd and Market streets.

Service members and Philadelphia police marched proudly down the parade path while carrying the American flag.

"As a retired U.S. Navy member, it's great to see the celebration of our country's founding," said Rodney Thomas, from Virginia.

People are proud of our country and happy to be celebrating Independence Day where it all started.

"It's not every day we are the center of the story, so it's fun to have everyone out celebrating and enjoying the experience," said Erin Johnson, from Old City.

"Growing up, my parents always said America is celebrating with me, so I grew up believing that. It gives me a great connection with the meaning of the holiday," said Stacey, Franklin, from Connecticut.
