PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Temperatures are soaring once again on Monday as the region deals with the second heat wave of the season. The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for the Philadelphia region, now in effect until 8 p.m. Wednesday.

The day started warm and muggy, and it only got worse — not only uncomfortable but potentially dangerous. That’s why Madeia Jacobs from East Falls got her steps in early.

“I don’t want to get overheated, so if you come out early enough then you won’t get the headache,” she said. “The heat will give you a huge headache and dizziness.”

The rest of the day Monday is expected to be partly sunny, very hot and humid, with a high of 96 degrees, according to AccuWeather Meteorologist Jason Caterina. Overnight: very warm and humid with some clouds, the low dropping down only to 76.

Heat exhaustion and, more urgently, heat stroke are concerns on days like this, when excessive heat and high humidity will bring the heat index to an estimated 101 degrees.

To stay safe, drink plenty of fluids, find shady and air-conditioned spaces and stay out of the sun.

When outdoors, take extra precautions: Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing, limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening, and take action at the first symptoms of heat-related illness.

"Running my errands on SEPTA, but I took a cab in today in town, because it's hot out here," said Carol, who slipped into a shaded University City parking garage to escape the sun while she waited for the bus. She was carrying an umbrella to shade herself from sun.

"So if you don't have to be at the bus stop right away, check the schedule."

Two construction workers in University City, Clyde and Eddie, said it's in their job description to stay cool.

"Well, we get used to it after a while," one said. "Plenty of water. Rest when you have to. Gatorade. Water. And you block it out. That's what you got to do. Block it out. Sometimes it's really all you can do is just block it out."

Officials throughout the area are urging people to check on loved ones who may be vulnerable and may not have access to air conditioning. In Philadelphia, cooling centers like libraries and senior centers are open. A full list of centers is available here .

On top of the heat advisory, a Code Orange Air Quality Action Day is in effect. People with sensitivities, respiratory issues like asthma, should be mindful and limit their outdoor time because of air pollution.

Tuesday, expect hot and humid conditions with sun giving way to clouds, with a afternoon and evening thunderstorm in spots. Expect a high temperature of 92 degrees, according to AccuWeather's Caterina.

Then, Wednesday, things will stay pretty hot and humid, with clouds and some sun, and a high, again, of 92 degrees. There will be thunderstorms in spots, mainly in the afternoon.
