Charles Barkley has never been known to back down. The 'Round Mound' has been involved in several skirmishes in his career. One of them happened in April 1990 when the Philadelphia 76ers faced the Detroit Pistons. Barkley and the Sixers won that game, 107-97, although he and several others did not get off lightly.

The incident happened with about 14 seconds left in the game. Although the outcome was already beyond reach, a skirmish involving Bill Laimbeer and Rick Mahorn resulted in a scuffle. Laimbeer flipped the ball towards Mahorn's face at the time. Barkly took exception to the action and charged at Lambs.

In addition, Sir Charles went as far as picking up a metal chair but was restrained by an assistant coach. Barkley even planned to go to the Pistons' dressing room at the end of the match but was restrained by referee Jake O'Donnell.

    Barkley hates Laimbeer

'The Prince of Darkness' had his share of haters when he was still actively playing. Barkley is one of them. Barkley said that while he never tried to start to fight the Pistons center, he would not back down from a fight.

"I hate Bill Laimbeer, I don't deny that," Barkley said after the incident via UPI.com. "I've never tried to start a fight with him, but I'm never going to back down from a fight with him," he added.

The bad blood between the two players went on as the teams left the court. They exchanged taunts on their way to the dugout.

    Trash-talking Charles

Given his demeanor, Barkley was involved in several incidents that season. Most of them are attributed to his trash-talking during games, and those actions cost him. The NBA issued stiff fines to players who were involved in that ruckus. The main protagonists, Barkley and Laimbeer, were handed a $20,000 fine each, as well as a one-game suspension for the fight.

Scott Hastings, who left the bench and joined the altercation, was fined $10,000. Isiah Thomas was also fined $7,500 for a separate incident in that encounter.

A total of 10 players were fined $500 for leaving their respective benches. That list included David Greenwood, John Salley, Mark Aguirre, Gerald Henderson, and William Bedford of Detroit. For Philly, fined were Ron Anderson, Kenny Payne, Kurt Nimphius, Scott Brooks, and Leonard Copeland.

    Barkley's superb season

Despite that incident, Barkley had a great 1989-90 season. The 11-time All-Star finished second in MVP voting behind Earvin "Magic" Johnson of the Los Angeles Lakers. Barkley averaged 25.2 points, 11.5 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 1.9 steals in 79 regular season games. Barkley and the Sixers reached the Eastern Conference semifinals but lost to the Chicago Bulls in five games, 4-1.

On the other side, the Pistons went on to win it all that season. They defeated the Portland Trail Blazers in the final, 4-1.

Despite his talent, Barkley was never able to savor an NBA title in his pro basketball career. The closest he got was with the Phoenix Suns in the 1992-93 season. The same year, Barkley won his first and only MVP award.
