Philadelphia is extending one of its most innovative concepts to the suburbs. Federal Donuts & Chicken, beloved for combining the sweet and savory elements indicated by the name, is opening a franchise location in Willow Grove, according to the Philadelphia Business Journal.

The unique eatery will be bringing its fryers to 4021 Welsh Road, taking over the space once occupied by a Jamba Juice. A precise opening date is not yet available for Federal Donuts, however the Willow Grove location is the second of three franchise stores slated for this year. Its opening is set to follow one in Radnor, which franchisees Chris Magarity, Michael Heller, and Mike Sloane intend to debut in late summer.

Federal Donuts & Chicken is the brainchild of celebrated restaurateurs Michael Solomonov and Steve Cook. As the name suggests, the eatery specializes in fried chicken and hot, fresh donuts. The unlikely pairing earned immediate fans, and the company is making a larger push towards expansion through franchising.

Co-franchisee Magarity believes the unusual nature of the concept will make it a hit beyond the city limits. “The unique kind of combination of a James Beard-winning chef and fast-casual food is something that’s one of a kind, and the fact that it’s a Philadelphia brand is very personal to all of us.”
