PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — There are more than 7 million people over the age of 65 with dementia, and millions of family members provide care for them.

One of the most difficult times for caregivers is in the evening when sundowning can occur. The syndrome is associated with increased agitation, confusion, anxiety and aggressive behavior.

Experts are not certain of the exact cause, but some theories include a disturbance in circadian rhythm. Studies of the brain suggest a degeneration of part of the brain called the suprachiasmatic nucleus of the hypothalamus.

For caregivers, the sundowning symptoms often occur while they are trying to rest, which adds to the difficulties in caring for the loved one. There is no effective treatment for this syndrome.
