Christmas in July? It seems that the impossible has occured at Philadelphia International Airport, where snow was just reported amid a blistering heatwave.

In fact, the city had record breaking daily snowfall on Sunday, despite the temperature reaching as much as 94 degrees Fahrenheit.

The amount was minuscule but it broke the record nonetheless, according to the National Weather Service's Record Event Report from the day.

The cause of the precipitation was actually hail from a passing thunderstorm, which apparently still counts as snow.

The weather service said: "Here's a win for Team Snow. Thunderstorms passed over Philadelphia International Airport Sunday afternoon and produced small hail.

"Since hail is frozen precipitation, this counts as a 'trace' of snow in our climate reports. Hence, the record daily snowfall report."

Local forecasters said that while the event is rare, it's not unusual. It turns out that's actually happened at least 13 times before.

Trace snow was recorded in the city in June 1911, July 1913, August 1914, August 1939, June 1951, June 1993, June 1998, July 2006, and July 2008.

It was also recorded twice in the summers of 1919 and 2011, according to the National Weather Service.

With more heat on the way for the rest of the week, locals won't be pulling out the shovels anytime soon - but maybe a few Christmas trees will appear along the way.
