Philadelphia, PA (WPHL) – A former Philadelphia homicide detective was found guilty of assaulting a suspect to obtain a confession, then lying about it in court.

The ex-officer, James Pitts was charged with obstruction and perjury by a Philadelphia jury for abusing his position.

Pitts was charged with assaulting then-suspect Obina Onyiah back in 2010 to force a false confession to robbery and murder of a jewelry store owner, William Glatz.

Onyiah’s conviction was vacated in 2021 after scientific evidence proved he could not have committed the crime.

Pitts is scheduled to be sentenced on October 4th.
