Bartram’s Garden, Councilmember Jamie Gauthier, and the City of Philadelphia are investigating a potential toxic chemical contamination that came from an industrial site adjacent to the garden.

According to a statement on Facebook , officials said, “This is an evolving and potentially dangerous situation. The impacted portion of the site will be closed while environmental testing is underway.”

This all started on July 15 when a visitor notified Bartram Garden’s employees of a potential chemical contamination near Bartram’s Mile Trail.

As the investigation continues , the Philadelphia Water Department confirmed that there is no risk to Philadelphia’s drinking water on July 17.

The Philadelphia Fire Department’s Hazardous Materials Unit also inspected the area around Bartram’s Mile Trail and found no threats to air quality or toxic run-off.

The PA Department of Environmental Protection will be testing the area for potential contamination and what possible health risks it might have.

Officials say testing can take several days.
