There may not have been a team in the NFL that was as disappointing as the Philadelphia Eagles in 2023. After representing the NFC in the Super Bowl the season before, and starting the season 10-1, Jalen Hurts and the team face-planted the rest of the way.
The Philadelphia Eagles won only one game from that point on, getting ousted from the playoffs during Super Wild Card Weekend by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. That led to some changes with the coaching staff and roster this offseason.
If the team wants to get back on track, the defensive performance needs to improve. Their unit was dominant in 2022 but regressed in 2023 with younger players stepping into prominent roles.
Free agent signings Devin White and C.J. Gardner-Johnson should help get things on track defensively. Offensively, the team will be looking to offensive coordinator Kellen Moore to help get things back on track.
In 2023, there seemed to be a disconnect on offense. Things didn’t click well and at times their offensive game plan was disjointed.
Some of the responsibility for that falls on the shoulders of quarterback Jalen Hurts. After a breakout 2022 campaign, he regressed in a few areas last season.
Heading into 2024, there is some pressure on Jalen Hurts to regain his form. In the opinion of Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports , he is one of five NFC quarterbacks under the most pressure heading into the season.
“One year after landing a then-record $255 million deal, and two years after going toe-to-toe with Patrick Mahomes in the Super Bowl , Hurts isn’t going anywhere. He’s still got top-tier mettle as the even-keeled face of the Eagles.
Still, there is immense pressure on Philadelphia to capitalize on an all-world skill group and return to title contention following a historic 2023 collapse. That starts with Hurts, whose more mercurial follow-up to 2022’s breakout helped facilitate Kellen Moore’s arrival as the new offensive coordinator.
Hurts’ trajectory in the new system could determine the fate of coach Nick Sirianni as well,” Benjamin wrote.
Heading into the season, the Philadelphia Eagles are currently the favorites to win the NFC East. It would be hard to argue against that, as they made a concerted effort to upgrade their weaknesses during the offseason.
The same cannot be said about their closest competition in the division, the Dallas Cowboys. 2024 will provide Moore a chance to rehab his value, as he was a fast-rising coordinator a few seasons ago but his star has dimmed.
If the Philadelphia Eagles offense can return to form, they will be one of the most explosive units in the NFL. Jalen Hurts is surrounded by an elite supporting cast of Saquon Barkley, A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith and Dallas Goedert.
