The Lincoln University of Pennsylvania Lions, led by Coach Frank Turner are looking to make waves in the CIAA and HBCU football in 2024. Last season, the Lions achieved a 4-6 record, the most wins the program has had in several years, signaling a potential shift away from being the perennial underdog. Can they keep the momentum with an explosive offense and a beefed-up defense?

Coach Turner’s Vision: From Hunting to Being the Hunter

Coach Turner has a clear vision for the Lions.

“The next step for us is really learning how to finish, learning how to hunt, really being the hunter instead of being the hunted,” he said.

Turner’s focus is on transforming the team’s mindset and approach. No longer are they the overlooked team; opponents now know they’re in for a fight.

Offensive Firepower: Isaiah Freeman Leads the Charge

Isaiah Freeman , the standout quarterback, is at the heart of Lincoln’s offensive resurgence. Alongside dynamic playmakers like Malachi Langley and Zyaire Tart , Freeman is set to lead an electrifying offense against their CIAA foes.

Coach Turner emphasized, “From a coach’s perspective, I’m just like, hey, get these guys the ball. Don’t make it hard. Don’t make it rocket science. Just get these guys the ball and let them do what they do.”

The Lincoln offense was potent in the CIAA last year, racking up yards in chunk plays. However, Turner is keen on improving consistency, especially in critical third-down situations and red zone efficiency.

“Our next step is to get those consistent third and mid-range downs, being consistent in the run game, learning how to finish.”

Defensive Overhaul: Beefing Up to Stop the Run

Defense has been Lincoln’s Achilles’ heel, but changes are underway. The first fix? Special teams.

“We signed a long snapper and a punter, a couple of them actually,” said Turner.

This move aims to improve field position, which has been a significant disadvantage for the HBCU team.

Lincoln also focused on recruiting more linebackers and defensive backs. “We went heavy at the linebacker position because deeper in the season, that’s what we tend to get weaker at. We’re bringing in like 40-some guys, talking about transfers and freshmen, most of them on the defensive side.”

Fan Excitement: Building a Football Culture

The excitement around Lincoln football is palpable. After a long absence, the team’s success last season has reignited school spirit.

“Football was gone for such a long time that now people understand what it feels like to have football back,” said Turner.

Homecoming games and night matches have become major events at HBCUs. Before football Lincoln’s homecoming didn’t involve sports.

Eyes on the Prize: Week One Against Clarion

The Lincoln University season opener against Clarion is crucial. Last year, they started slow, spotting Clarion 21 points before finding their rhythm.

Turner knows the importance of a strong start. “That game is huge for us on so many different levels. We got to come out of the blocks.”

This game isn’t just about kicking off the season; it’s about setting the tone for what Lincoln can achieve. Beating Clarion would be a significant milestone and a confidence booster for the team and its supporters. A strong performance in this game would also be a proud moment for the HBCU community, showing that they can compete at outside of the conference.

Conclusion: A Team on a Mission

Lincoln University’s Lions, under Coach Turner’s leadership, are no longer the underdogs. With an explosive offense and a revamped defense, they are ready to make their mark. As Turner put it, “This year, what you will expect from us is a football team that really is on a mission.”

The Lions are roaring back, and the CIAA better be ready.
