One early lesson from Philadelphia Eagles training camp?

Running back Saquon Barkley could have an even bigger role than expected.

Granted, when the Eagles made the splash and swiped Barkley from an NFC East rival, the plan was a big workload.

But according to Jimmy Kempski of Philly Voice, Barkley was doing the heavy lifting in unexpected ways: “Saquon Barkley was heavily involved in the passing game, and he probably had more receptions than anyone on the team. He lined up all over the formation.”

Barkley himself hasn’t come close to the 121 targets in the passing game he received as a rookie. But he does average better than seven yards per catch on his career to date. And the Eagles haven’t gotten much out of their running backs in recent years through the air. Last year, D'Andre Swift had the most targets of any back on the roster with 49.

Given Jalen Hurts' lethality on looks such as RPOs and the sheer creativity of offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, Barkley’s production could flirt with career bests if the first day of camp is any indication of what's to come.

Keep in mind weapons like A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith on the perimeter, too. This versatile workload for Barkley can counteract blitzes and, on paper, create one of the most formidable units in the league.
