Philadelphia Eagles training camp hints at problem only trade might fix

After the first two big names on the depth chart, Philadelphia Eagles wide receivers just haven’t impressed at training camp.

A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith, of course, have a lock on the top slots. But the third wideout spot is very much up for grabs.

Yet, nobody has seized the chance just yet. Not fifth-round rookie Ainias Smith or sixth-rounder Johnny Wilson. Nor has free-agent signee Parris Campbell flashed. Even rehab project and former first-rounder John Ross hasn’t been able to make noise.

The problem is so apparent, at least early, that Jimmy Kempski of Philly Voice needed to write this: “There's a good chance Howie Roseman trades for a wide receiver.”

Now, some of this is more complicated than it needed to be, but the team couldn’t have predicted that DeVante Parker would retire from the league after signing in March.

Still, the offense can’t exactly go into the season without a reliable, proven No. 3 wideout, either. Especially considering head coach Nick Sirianni has stepped back to let offensive coordinator Kellen Moore do his thing.

For now, it seems like Campbell and Ross will keep splitting first-team reps as the third wideout. But barring a big change, the Eagles could be buyers soon, if not around the time of final cuts.
