Jazz Chisholm Jr. in spotlight: Here's how this new Yankees player is making a difference

PHILADELPHIA – Since his arrival as a Yankee, it’s simply been All That Jazz.

Jazz Chisholm made it back-to-back nights with two home runs on Tuesday, including a game altering three-run shot that stunned the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park.

Clay Holmes blew the save in the ninth, but the Yankees survived in 12 innings, 7-6, with their fourth straight win.

"I feel like a kid out there,'' said Chisholm, whom Aaron Judge praised for his "great at-bat after great at-bat'' following a three-hit, five-RBI night.

Also, "that's a guy who's playing a new position...and looks like he's been playing there his whole life,'' said Judge. "He brings a great energy...and we kind of like having him in the middle of the lineup.''

With a bloop single in the 12 th , Chisholm pushed the go-ahead run to third base, and Gleyber Torres’ sacrifice fly was the difference as reliever Michael Tonkin - with defensive help from center fielder Trent Grisham - sent the pennant-contending Phillies to a ninth loss in their last 12 games.

Chisholm's addition represented all the sizzle in a Yankees' trade deadline period that finished Tuesday minus the addition of an A-list arm or another impact bat.

Before the 6 p.m. MLB trade deadline, the Yankees’ Tuesday haul consisted of solid veteran right-handed reliever Mark Leiter Jr., reliever Enyel De Los Santos and two minor league pitchers.

"Getting to come to this team is something I'm really excited about,'' said Leiter Jr., who grew up in Toms River, N.J.

Leiter Jr. made an instant impression, stranding the bases loaded in the 10th inning, in what was "a crazy day, for sure'' in moving from the Chicago Cubs to the team his father and uncle, Al, pitched for a generation ago.

"The trade deadline's always a crazy day,'' said Judge. "Glad it's over with, and glad we got the guys we got in this room, and now it's time to go.''

The AL East-leading Orioles were active, adding two starters, including Zach Eflin, while boosting their bullpen and landing an intriguing (but so far disappointing) hitter in Eloy Jimenez.

On Saturday, GM Brian Cashman sent three prospects, including catcher Agustin Ramirez, to the Miami Marlins for Chisholm, who played a starring role on Tuesday night.

"He enjoys playing in this environment, on this stage,'' said manager Aaron Boone. "He's embraced us, and everyone in this room has embraced him back.''

That's now back-to-back wins against Phillies' starters Zack Wheeler and Aaron Nola, whose anticiapted Tuesday matchup against Gerrit Cole never came off.

Cole was scratched due to general fatigue, struggling to recover from his last start but expecting to return to the rotation this weekend.

The ace's absence led to rookie Will Warren making his first MLB start, and "I didn't know if I was nervous,'' said the right-hander, who lasted 5.1 innings, charged with four runs. "I was more in shock, maybe?''

Soon enough, it was time for the Phillies to experience something of a shock.

After belting a solo homer off Nola in the sixth, Chisholm gave the Yankees a one-run advantage in the seventh against lefty reliever Matt Strahm.

Chisholm fouled off a one-out, 1-2 slider and launched the next pitch – also a slider – into the right field seats for a 5-4 lead, scoring Juan Soto and Judge, who had each walked.

"I faced (Strahm) a lot this year, I got a couple singles off him,'' said Chisholm, adding that "I locked in there, felt really comfortable, especially talking to Soto and Judge before that at-bat, and 'Dugo (Alex Verdugo).''

Playing just his second MLB game at third base, Chisholm made a dazzling play to rob Trea Turner with a runner at first base to end the seventh.

But the Yankees’ suspect bullpen came into focus again, as Holmes failed to protect a one-run lead in the ninth (albeit with some soft groundball contact) by wild-pitching home the tying run.

In the 10 th , the .174-hitting DJ LeMahieu – reduced to a late-inning defensive duty – fouled out with Chisholm at third base and one out, and the Yanks failed to score.

Alex Verdugo’s sac fly gave the Yanks an 11 th inning lead, which was erased against Tonkin in the bottom half.

But in finding their way to a win, "it was a fun one to be a part of,'' said Judge, who defended Holmes as "our guy'' as the closer.
