    Phillips soccer needs a coach

The 2025 season for the Phillips High School girls soccer program will depend on player participation and finding a coach, according to the Phillips School Board meeting on July 15.

The board accepted the resignation of Caroline Corbett as the varsity girls soccer coach for the 2025 season at the meeting. Corbett is a school counselor and accepted a position at another school district.

Phillips has the only soccer program in the region and shares the Division 4 Northern Lights Conference with Three Lakes/Phelps and Ironwood.

Corbett had replaced Lyn Ludwig who served as coach of the 2024 team. Mark Fuhr coached the team from 2019 to 2023. Under Courtney Graff the team went 10-2 in 2016 and 12-4 in 2015, going all the way to the WIAA Regional Final in both years. The team has struggled in recent years.

Phillips School District administrative assistant Heather Soukup said the boys soccer program ended years ago due to lack of participation. The girls program continues but the future of the team will depend on the number of participants and signing a coach.

“We are searching for a coach,” said Phillips High School Athletic Director MIke Eggebrecht.

It’s still early enough in the year to be too concerned about a spring sport. The concern over participation is also too soon to gauge.

“Our numbers are low right now so we are not sure what the team will look like next year,” Eggebrecht said.
