PHILLIPSBURG, NJ - The ‘Berry Blast’ event at the weekly Phillipsburg Farmers Market was brought together families, food enthusiasts, bakers and local businesses for a day of berry-themed excitement in Shappell Park.
Watch as Phillipsburg resident Phil Schultz, the winner, Alex Ibarra, local Key Clubbers and the other contestants enjoy the blueberry pie eating contest.
Gourmet Delights: Hunterdon County's own Gourmet Board Room was a standout with their make your own charcuterie boards and bike-powered berry, red, white, and blue smoothies. Yes, it really was powered by pedaling.
Farm Fresh Goodness: Wagner Family Farm, a local favorite, provided just-picked fresh veggies and fresh corn, with local resident Tom Sulick stepping in to husk away to help sales, adding a healthy option for market-goers. New this week, Wagner Farms is now part of the Farmers Market Nutrition Program, accepting WIC Farmer Market and Senior Farmers Market benefits for the purchase of locally grown fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs. This initiative makes fresh produce more accessible to the community and is affordable for all households in Phillipsburg. Be sure to stop by for their weekly specials.
Berry Pie Contest: The highlight of the event was the Berry Pie Contest, judged by McWane Ductile's Kelly Bray, Councilman Keith Kennedy, and Director of Community Development and Inspections Pat Kays. Aurora Vargas from Autumn Delights took home the top prize with her delectable mixed berry with crumble top pie.
Pie Eating Contest: The pie-eating contest was a hit with spectators and participants of all ages. Phil Schultz emerged as the champion, quickly finishing his blueberry pie on an empty plate, but the smiles from the kids were what made the event the most fun to cheer on!
The Berry Blast event was a fun addition to this community weekly event, where local produce, vendors and of course, berries and produce were plentify. Our yard picked up a blackberry plant we can’t wait to plant it.
Fresh Produce Accessibility: The Phillipsburg Farmers Market now accepts WIC benefits, making fresh produce more accessible. This initiative ensures that everyone can enjoy the bounty of locally grown fruits, vegetables, and herbs.
