WASHINGTON, NJ - Abilities of Northwest Jersey, Inc.'s Mary Apgar Center in Washington, NJ, celebrated a special event honoring Ethan Burke of Phillipsburg, NJ, and Boy Scout Troop 54 on Monday, July 15, 2024.
Burke’s 2024 Eagle Scout Project involved rebuilding a dilapidated greenhouse at the center, which provided valuable training opportunities for many of the facility's residents.
"We are truly grateful that Ethan chose our greenhouse, as it is a wonderful training opportunity for so many who are served at that location. We look forward to thanking Ethan and recognizing his efforts on our behalf," said Cynthia B. Wildermuth, Chief Executive Officer of Abilities.
Local dignitaries, including New Jersey Senator Douglas J. Steinhardt (R-District 23), also an Eagle Scout, attended the event along with County Commissioners James P. Kern III and Lori Ciesla to support and commend Ethan's dedication and hard work.

Achieving the rank of Eagle Scout is a prestigious milestone in the Boy Scouts of America, representing the highest level of achievement in the organization. It requires a tremendous commitment to leadership, service, and personal development. Scouts must earn merit badges, demonstrate leadership in a community service project, and embody the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives. The Eagle Scout rank is a dedication to service and perseverance and displays an individual's readiness to make a positive impact on their community and the world.
Burke's project encompassed all of that and revitalized the space at the Mary Apgar Center, which now showcases the positive impact that community-driven initiatives can have on local organizations and the people they serve.
