The Delaware Port Authority is urging drivers to celebrate Labor Day Weekend safely by thinking before they get behind the wheel.

“Keeping the roads clear of impaired drivers must continue to be a priority for law enforcement officers throughout this country,” Delaware River Port Authority Police Department’s Lt. Sean Longfellow said. “There is no excuse for getting behind the wheel of a motor vehicle while impaired”

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, fatalities in alcohol-impaired-driving crashes increased by 14.2% from 2020 to 2021 and two-thirds of drunk driving crash fatalities in 2021 involved a driver with a blood alcohol concentration of .15 or more.

“If you know you are going to become impaired [be sure you are] with a designated driver, and in cases of an unexpected impairment, remember to grab your phone and use the apps instead of reaching for the keys” Longfellow said.

Police will have more patrols in place to watch for drunk drivers in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware.
