50 million New Jersey Residents’ lives are about to change, their medical debt will be completely forgiven.

Governor Phil Murphy made the announcement on Tuesday.

That is a total of $100 million of debt previously owed to the health-care industry.

The governor will use $550,000 in federal funds and partner with Undue Medical Debt, a non-profit that buys unpaid medical bills from hospitals at a discount, to pay off the debt.

Residents below the federal poverty level, or who have debt worth 5% or more of their annual income, will qualify for debt relief.

If you think you qualify, look out for a letter in the mail this week to see if you were chosen.
