What started as a dream in 2016, the Manayunk Welcome Center has officially come to real life and is having its grand opening today!

As a long-time dream of the Manayunk Development Corporation and the Manayunk Special Services District, the brand new, four-story building is which will serve as the headquarters for MDC and MSSD operations, is now open for business.

The $1.7 million project which is now come to real life as a four-story building features the new Manayunk Welcome Center and retail space on the ground floor, leasable office space on the second floor, the MDC office on the third floor, and a community meeting space on the fourth-floor. The project was funded through loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration.

The building was completed in Spring 2024, and the project has spanned 9 years since the initial concept was discussed. Finally, MDC is a stakeholder and can compete with other districts that purchased property in their district corridors over recent years. The organization is now a true economic developer. Not only will this building at 106 Grape Street be the home of the MDC and MSSD, but it has these exciting rental components.

“The Welcome Center serves as the gateway and a link to our thriving business community, offering visitors a warm introduction and ensuring they connect with the best local services, restaurants and retail. By guiding residents, customers, newcomers and tourists, it not only enhances their experience but also drives economic growth, fosters local partnerships, and promotes the unique strengths of  Manayunk. It’s the starting point for building lasting relationships and a vibrant business district.” Gwen McCauley, Executive Director shared

Dan Nediscin (MSSD President)  stated “By investing in property within its own district, a Business Improvement District (BID) demonstrates a deep commitment to the community’s long-term success. This strategic move not only stabilizes the area but also attracts further investment, enhances property values, and ensures that the BID has a direct stake in the ongoing development and prosperity of the district. It’s an investment in the future of Manayunk, creating a solid foundation for growth and sustainability.”

Chris Maquire, board president,  owner of Tubby Robot and Manayunk residence said “The Manayunk Development Corporation’s new building at 106 Grape street has been a long term project that was supported by many hands, and I’m thrilled that we’ve been able to push it across the finish line in 2024. This building will serve not only as a permanent home for the MDC but also as an invaluable resource for shopkeepers, residents, and visitors alike. If something interesting is happening in Manayunk it’s almost certainly going to be channeled through these walls, and I can’t wait to see how the community will grow around this beautiful space.Manayunk is an intricate neighborhood with remarkable depth to be found around every corner. Our goal is to use this building to connect people to Manayunk in ways they’ve never before considered, and the new Welcome Center will be core to that aim. There’s so much to share and we’ve just begun to scratch the surface!”
