An exciting event is coming to South Philadelphia for the first time on September 21st! In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, Latinos Educando Juntos (LEJ) is hosting a “Hispanic Literacy Festival & Community Baby Shower.”

“We’re here to support the Hispanic community. We try to educate each other, really provide resources and fill in gaps as much as we can,” said Damaris Alvarado-Rodriguez, president of LEJ.

The event will feature several children’s book authors reading their books, music, free giveaways of books, free baby giveaways and raffles as well as food trucks and more.

“A lot of our books are in English and Spanish. Providing books at home is really essential where families will be able to read to their children every single night and we’re here to give them all the books that we can,” said Damaris.

The community baby shower hopes to promote safe sleep practices.

“I’m very happy to announce that we have over 25 big items like car seats and playpens,” said Damaris.

The event is free to the community. It’s all happening at Southwark Elementary School schoolyard at 1835 S. 9 th Street on Saturday, September 21 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information, click here.
