The Camden County Health Department has reported a probable fifth case of the West Nile Virus.

Officials said they received a positive test result for the virus this week and the Camden County Department of Health and Human Services (CCDHHS) has started an investigation.

“Although we are transitioning into fall, the threat of mosquito borne illnesses are still present and residents should take precautions like wearing long sleeved shirts and pants when possible, using bug spray and removing standing water on their property,” said Commissioner Virginia Betteridge, liaison to the Health Department.

Betteridge states the Mosquito Control Commission has completed additional spraying, treatment, trapping, and mosquito testing in the area.

Some of the symptoms of the West Nile Virus you should look out for include:

    • Fever
    • Headaches
    • Altered Mental Status
    • Neurological dysfunctions

The CCDHHS recommends using insect repellent approved by the Enviromental Protection Agency with active ingredients like:

    • DEET
    • Picaridin (known as KBR 3023 and icaridin outside the US)
    • IR3535
    • Oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE)
    • Para-menthane-diol (PMD)
    • 2-undecanone
