As September wraps up so does Baby Safety Month. Police officer Daren Swain from the Lower Merion Police Department shared important information when it comes to car seat safety.

“People may not realize but 8 out of 10 car seats are improperly installed and any opportunity to correctly install a car seat allows us to make sure people are safe on the roadway,” said Officer Swain.

Important details to check include the direction of the car seat and placement of the chest clip and shoulder straps.

“Kids should be rear-facing, two and under. Another thing is making sure the chest clip is at armpit level, making sure the shoulder straps if they are rear-facing come at or slightly below the shoulders, and making sure the car seat fits properly for them.”

It’s also important to not have the car seat pressed up against either the driver’s side or passenger’s side seat.

“More than often collisions are forward or behind you so if there were to be a need for a recoil the seat can bounce back up instead of being jarred by a seat pressing up against it.”
