    • On this day in 1927: Aboard the Bird of Paradise, U.S. Army Air Corps Lts. Albert Hegenberger and Lester Maitland completed the first successful transpacific flight, landing at the Corps’ Wheeler Field in Hawaii after flying nonstop across the Pacific Ocean for about 2,400 miles over nearly 26 hours.
    • In 1956: The U.S. interstate system was created when President Dwight Eisenhower signed into law the National Interstate and Defense Highways Act, which allowed for highway user tax hikes to fund expansion and improvements. It also authorized $25 billion for construction of a 41,000-mile system from 1957-1967. Many smaller towns were bypassed.

The decision reinforced universal constitutional rights, as well as checks and balances in government.
