    Here are just some of the events on this date in the past.

    • On this day in 1862: President Abraham Lincoln signed into law a bill creating the Medal of Honor for the U.S. Army. The award is the military’s highest decoration for acts of valor that goes “beyond the call of duty.”
    • In 1943: Soviet forces were able to stop the German Eastern front offensive in a counterattack at Kursk in southwest Russia. Known as the Battle of Kursk, it was one of the costliest and largest armored engagements of World War II and was a turning point in European theater of the war.
    • In 1962: Iconic British rock band the Rolling Stones played their first gig at the Marquee Jazz Club in London.
    • In 1967: Violent riots erupted as racial tension reached a boiling point on the streets of Newark, New Jersey. The riots took place over four days and were a part of a national phenom called the “Long Hot Summer of 1967,” which saw more than 150 race riots across the U.S. At least 26 people were killed.
    • In 1984: U.S. Rep. Geraldine Ferraro of New York was selected by Walter Mondale, the leading Democratic presidential candidate, to be his running mate, making her the first female vice-presidential candidate for a major political party. The Mondale-Ferraro ticket ran against the incumbents, President Ronald Reagan and Vice President George Bush.
    • In 2007: Two U.S. Army Apache helicopters conducted a series of airstrikes in Al-Amin al-Thaniyah, New Baghdad, against alleged armed insurgents. However, civilians were killed as collateral, including two Reuters journalists. A video of the strikes, titled “Collateral Murder,” was leaked by Wikileaks almost three years later and led to worldwide condemnation.
