Lynch: Opposes chair of labor relations board

I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the renomination of Lauren McFerran as chair of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).

This decision poses a significant threat to independent contractors in Arizona and across the country.

Under McFerran’s leadership, the NLRB has demonstrated a tendency to favor traditional employment models over independent contracting, despite workers like myself routinely saying they want to remain independent contractors. Many of the Board’s actions under her tenure make it clear that she would like to see all independent contractors treated as employees.

This bias undermines the flexibility and autonomy that many Arizonans, particularly those in the gig economy, value. Independent contractors choose their work arrangements for the freedom it provides, enabling them to balance personal commitments and professional aspirations more effectively.

Arizona has a thriving startup ecosystem that heavily relies on the contributions of independent contractors.

By pushing for stricter definitions of employee status, the NLRB risks disrupting these essential business models, ultimately harming both workers and entrepreneurs. McFerran’s renomination is a step backward for the independent contractors in Arizona. Senators Kyrsten Sinema and Mark Kelly should oppose McFerran.
