Ebony Magazine released Ebony Eats 45 , a list of their 45 "favorite Black-owned restaurants and Black chefs from across the country," which included two metro Phoenix restaurants — SugarJam The Southern Kitchen in Scottsdale and Early Bird Vegan in Tempe.

SugarJam is the brainchild of chef Dana Dumas , whose culinary career began with selling cookies out of her home in 2011. Since then, she's grown SugarJam to a full-service breakfast and lunch restaurant complete with a bar and bakery.

Early Bird Vegan's chef Krystal Mack grew up on the west side of Phoenix and is inspired by flavors from around the world. She cites father's Southern cooking, her mother's Thai food and the tamales she'd eat with her friends from Mexico City as key influences. Mack operates a food truck as well as a brick-and-mortar store, both of which are all-vegan.
