Some metro Phoenix residents were expected to see rain and lightning as isolated showers moved through the Valley on Thursday.

A fast-moving storm system began moving across metro Phoenix at about 5 a.m., the National Weather Service in Phoenix wrote in a post on X, formerly Twitter. The showers were expected to clear around 8 a.m.

The National Weather Service said there are chances of rain showers and thunderstorms for the next seven days, including Thursday evening.

"There's about a 15%, 20% chance for additional activity this evening," said National Weather Service meteorologist Katherine Berislavich on Thursday morning. "As we go through the weekend and into early next week, our rain chance, our storm chances, they're going to ramp up."

While the storms would likely be focused on the higher terrain of the state, metro Phoenix's chances of rain increase over the weekend and early next week.

    Excessive heat warning to come

Temperatures were expected to reach between 110-115 degrees on Thursday, according to Berislavich. This is still lower than a year ago, however. The high on July 18, 2023, was 118, according to Berislavich.

There is an excessive heat warning for Friday and Saturday, Berislavich added.
