(The Center Square)— Phoenix Sky Harbor’s utility plant is expected to get major updates using federal taxpayer dollars.

Thirty-six million from the 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act was allocated to the project as part of the Airport Terminal Program within the law with a price tag of over $1 trillion in total.

“Our historic bipartisan infrastructure law continues to deliver for Arizona communities,” Sen. Mark Kelly stated. “This investment allows for crucial renovations to Phoenix Sky Harbor, upgrading one of our most important economic drivers and ensuring Arizonans have access to safe and reliable travel.”

Some of the money will be used to improve several concourses and the air conditioning system in Terminal 4, according to the news release.

In total, $5 billion federally went toward the Terminal program that functions on a grant system. It’s meant to be spent $1 billion each year from 2022-26, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

“Thanks to our Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, we’re delivering $36 million to improve safety, efficiency, and accessibility at Phoenix Sky Harbor–allowing Arizonans to safely travel with ease and peace of mind,” Sinema stated.

Sky Harbor is considered one of the busiest in America, with 2023 seeing its highest traffic.
