Several new fire starts confirmed on Umpqua National Forest
ROSEBURG, Ore. – Umpqua National Forest officials said that numerous new fire starts were confirmed on Thursday following smoke checks. Nine new fire starts were confirmed as of July 18, according to Forest Service officials. Umpqua National Forest authorities said that the largest of these new starts is the Adam Mountain Fire estimated at 50 acres burning south of the Row River and southeast of Cottage Grove. Air resources are being brought in for the Chilcoot mountain fire effort in Douglas County, which is the second-largest new start at 40 acres, while the Lemolo Fire in northeastern Douglas County has a burn area of about 15 acres, according to the Forest Service. Forest official said that the Watson Fire, located east of Tokatee Falls and south of the North Umpqua River, is currently estimated at 10 acres. Multiple fires, such as the Pig Iron, Shadow, Horse Heaven Creek, and Cultus fires, have a footprint of 1 to 5 acres, and firefighters have fully contained multiple smaller fires less than an acre in size which include the Bald Ridge, Spring, White Creek, and Puddin fires, forest officials said.
