The term "Blue Moon" is most commonly used today to refer to when two full moons occur in the night sky in one single month.

However, this most common rule that we use today to determine a blue moon is not the rule that should be used at all when determining this "blue moon".

This blue moon is called a seasonal blue moon meaning that this full moon is the third full moon in the season of Summer. Four full moons occured in the Summer including June 21st, July 21st, August 19 and September 18. With the third full moon in this sequence occuring in August, this makes this full moon a "blue moon".

This is the last time that a blue moon will be visible in the night sky until May 31, 2026.

Now you may be asking yourself the question of whether or not the moon is actually blue?

The answer is both a simple yes and no. Most of the time the moon does not appear blue at all. However, on some occasions the full blue moon can appear blue!

The "blue-ish" tint on the full moon is caused when atmospheric conditions are perfectly right.

This only happens on rare occasions but then again so does the blue moon so keep your eyes peeled as this event could truly be on for the books!

The moon is set to first appear in the night sky on August 18, 2024. The full moon will reach full peak illumination on August 19, 2024 at 2:26 p.m. The blue moon will be visible until August 20.
