New Splash Pads Unveiled at J.P. Johnson Park

The city held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday to mark the opening of new splash pads at J.P. Johnson Park. The American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funded the splash pads, discretionary funds from Councilmembers Larry Breland and Lyn Bogan Bumpers, and a grant from the Lower Pearl River Valley Foundation funded fencing and concrete pads.

Councilman Larry Breland began the ceremony with a prayer. Mayor Jim Luke, City Manager Harvey Miller, and Clyde Dease, director of the Lower Pearl River Valley Foundation, then made remarks. They discussed the collaborative effort and funding that facilitated the project.

Mayor Luke said “We appreciate the support from the Lower Pearl River Valley Foundation and the contributions from our councilmembers.”

City Manager Miller noted the significance of community projects and their impact on local neighborhoods. Clyde Dease emphasized the foundation’s role in improving public spaces.

Trevor Adams, the Parks and Recreation director, concluded the speeches by acknowledging the efforts of everyone involved in the project.

Following the speeches, Mayor Luke and Councilman Breland cut the ceremonial ribbon, officially opening the splash pads to the public. Local residents and officials attended the event, marking the completion of the project.

The new splash pads at J.P. Johnson Park are now open and available for public use.
