The Pickaway County Republican Party has called for the resignation of Carolyn Loxley, chairwoman of the Pickaway County Democratic Party, after controversial remarks were posted to the party’s social media account about the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump.

Ohio’s Republican Party Chairman Alex Triantafilou and journalist Megyn Kelly have tweeted about the Pickaway County Democratic Party’s recent, now deleted, tweet that says Trump “practically got a free ear piercing” when a bullet grazed his ear at a campaign rally July 13 in Butler, Pennsylvania.

In a statement to the Herald on Wednesday, Loxley said the words in the tweet were distorted to make unfounded accusations against the party. Loxley did not say she will be resigning.

Posted to X, formerly Twitter, screenshots of the Pickaway County Democratic Party’s now deleted tweet said:

Reportedly, in Trump’s rambling incoherent 92 minute speech at the Republican National Convention, he claims he “took a bullet!”

The reality is that he practically got a free ear piercing.

What a whiner and a complainer!

What an embarrassment for the United States of America…

That tweet generated a lot of commentary on the Pickaway Democrats’ Facebook page and was spread near and far across social media.

The Megyn Kelly Show has nearly 2.1 million followers on YouTube. Kelly retweeted a post from @LibsofTiktok, The Pickaway County Democratic Party in Ohio just deleted this post. Would be a shame if it went viral.

There are more than 1.5 million registered Republicans in Ohio according to the state’s Secretary of State.

Triantafilou tweeted, Shockingly horrific rhetoric from one of Ohio county’s party organizations. This is disgusting and Democrats nationwide should condemn this kind of hateful rhetoric. An innocent man was murdered. Do they have no shame?!

Pickaway County Republican Party issued a statement Tuesday that condemned the remarks posted by the Pickaway County Democratic Party.

The Republican Party of Pickaway County cannot allow such rhetoric to go unchallenged. We are calling for the immediate resignation of the Pickaway County Democratic Party chair, Carolyn Loxley. As the leader of the local party, she bears full responsibility for this shameful behavior. While President Biden calls for cooling tensions, Carolyn Loxley and her party are normalizing and mocking political violence against their political opponents.

We also call on every elected Democratic official in Pickaway County to make a public statement condemning these remarks. Silence in the face of such vile behavior is complicity. They must take a firm and vocal stand against this abhorrent rhetoric. Comments like these are not just inappropriate—they are dangerous and can lead to further tragedy.

The Pickaway County Republican Party said Loxley should resign.

“We urge all decent and patriotic Americans to contact the Pickaway County Democratic Party and demand the resignation of Carolyn Loxley. Let them know that we will not tolerate this kind of behavior in Pickaway County.”

To read the Pickaway County Republican Party’s full remarks regarding Loxley’s tweet, see our opinion page on A4. The online version of this story contains a link to those remarks .

Loxley offered her personal response — not as the chair of Pickaway County Democratic Party — to the Herald on Wednesday.

The Pickaway County Democratic Party has never and will never support political—or other violence—in any form. The statements or implications that any statement made on behalf of the Pickaway County Democratic Party did so is flatly false and misleading.

By raising any question of the words spoken by a Republican candidate, our words are distorted and used to make accusations against us.

The fact is, the Pickaway County Democratic Party is fully committed to civil discourse and working hard with all residents of Pickaway County to improve the quality of life, work opportunities and education in the County.

We value the support shown by many members of the community through positive messages and financial donations as this situation has unfolded.

Words have power and must always be used with care. We encourage that awareness be accepted and adhered to by everyone as we enter a very fraught time in our political experience.
