LSSU adds new American Sign Language course
SAULT STE. MARIE — Lake Superior State University is addressing a growing need for the community and students with the introduction of a new American Sign Language course. Earlier this month, LSSU announced the addition of a non-credit introductory course for American Sign Language (ASL). The course is not designed to be part of a more extensive program but to increase inclusivity and reduce communication barriers on campus.
13th Annual Burger Bash raises money for Road to Recovery
SAULT STE. MARIE — MyMichigan Medical Center Sault and Central Savings Bank recently hosted the 13th Annual Burger Bash to raise money for the Road to Recovery Program. The fundraiser took place on June 12, and raised $8,548. The program, which is volunteer-driven, transports oncology patients from Sault Ste. Marie to Petoskey for specialized treatments.

Sault Ste. Marie closer to $2.5M grant for the I-500 thanks to state budget
SAULT STE. MARIE — $250,000 from Michigan’s 2025 budget will be going to enhancing the Soo International-500 Snowmobile Racetrack by way of a community enhancement grant. The Sault Ste. Marie Convention & Visitors Bureau said the funding will allow for major progress to be made towards the goal of renovating parts of the I-500 track and surrounding property. The community enhancement grant funding will go towards helping the Sault CVB and City of Sault Ste. Marie fulfill the requirements needed to receive a $2.5 million grant. “To me it means so much to our community,” said Sault CVB Executive Director Linda Hoath. “To have our legislators have our back and help improve our area means everything to us.” The I-500 is a vital part to the Eastern Upper Peninsula’s economy during winter months and drives tourist in from across the Midwest and Ontario.

City approves lock boxes to improve fire safety
SAULT STE. MARIE — The City of Sault Ste. Marie is standardizing the use of Knox Boxes to help families and businesses with fire safety. At the Sault City Commission meeting on July 1, commissioners passed an ordinance to force buildings in the city to comply to International Fire Code by installing a Sault Fire Department approved lock box called a Knox Box.
